Power cuts have struck several major North American and Canadian cities, according to witnesses. Power cuts were reported in New York city; Toledo, Ohio; Cleveland, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania, Hertford and Albany, New England and Detroit, Michigan as well as in Toronto and Ottawa in Canada. Cities as far away as Chicago are affected and airports have been closed. The New York stock exchange ground to a halt, and it was not clear how quickly it would be able to re-open. In New York, subway trains and offices have been evacuated. Traffic lights have failed and the streets are full of people who must now walk back to their homes in blazing heat.
