MESEREAU EXPLAINS PARTING OF WAYS WITH MIJAC: Attorney said representation was always meant to be temporary. Attorney Thomas Mesereau has released a statement disputing recent reports about his departure as legal counsel for Michael Jackson. Fox 411's Roger Friedman wrote that Mesereau and his partner Susan Yu, who successfully defended Jackson against child molestation charges last June, have resigned as the singer's attorneys because they haven't been paid by the pop star. Without naming Friedman, Mesereau fired back in a statement yesterday (Feb. 23) saying he is "very disturbed by the false, erroneous, and self-serving reports" regarding his employment for Jackson, which he maintains was always supposed to be temporary. Mesereau said he and his partner were asked to remain Jackson's lawyers for several months following the June 2005 acquittal – until Jackson and his children could recover and move on from the exhaustion caused by the trial. "Because Michael Jackson was our client, and is our friend, Attorney Susan Yu and I agreed to help him and his family during this time of transition," Mesereau said in a statement. "For approximately seven months, we assisted Michael Jackson in this effort. We never intended to assume these obligations on a permanent basis." Mesereau says his first love is criminal defense, and he will be working on two Capital murder cases in Alabama during April and June in which he is representing the client free of charge. "I am also assisting in the development of a free legal clinic for the poor at a prominent African American church in Los Angeles," Mesereau continued. "Attorney Susan Yu has other clients that she needs to attend to as well." Source: http://eurweb.com/story/eur25020.cfm
