9:52 PM: Holy shit, they’re playing the first thirty seconds of “Billie Jean,” it’s like somebody lifted the shades for a moment. And Michael Jackson isn’t even here. Looks like some “surprise Michael Jackson appearance” check didn’t cash out. Or maybe Chris Brown gave his DJ the gang sign for “I’m dying out here, put on some music.”

9:50 PM: A standing O for Chris Brown and one that is well deserved. Finally a little life. Think about that, MTV — if you get talented people together and let them perform, oh I don’t know, music, good things happen.

Interesting how people can talk out of both sides of their mouth within minutes.

Thank God for Chris Brown

I never thought I’d say that, but I’ll say it again — thank God and the Moonman and the man in the moon for Chris Brown. It’s not that I don’t like the new VMAs format — I love the whole “one night only,” once-in-a-lifetime moment in music history thing (especially opposed to the old model, which was basically — what? — watch it tonight or any waking moment for the next month until you can’t close your eyes without dreaming of that dude from Rage Against the Machine climbing the scaffolding). Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and 50 Cent in an “impromptu” collaborative performance? Nice. And I like how everyone’s down with the folks, performing at the crowd level like they’re real people (as if there weren’t big scary body guards just off-camera ready to throttle anyone who actually touches the boldface names).

That said, I need a little spectacle, people! Sure, it was cool — OK, really freaking rad — when Cee-Lo was just on the floor rocking the crap out of the Foo Fighters. But no more sweaty bands looking like they just got done playing Lollapalooza back when Lolla was a tour, MTV! If I wanted to see Dave Grohl perspire, I’d pay an exorbitant amount of money to watch him do it through binoculars at some arena, all right? For the VMAs, I want some special effects, a little choreography and some hot little kid dancers, damn it!

Which is why Chris Brown is — so far — King of the VMAs, as far as I’m concerned. Dude didn’t even pretend to have a microphone — he just started freaking flying from platform to platform and busting a move with a couple of eight-year-olds. Now THAT is a VMA performance people. Even Mr. Quadruple Threat himself, JT, gave Brown props for showing JT “how old I am.”WAIT — was there just a subliminal announcement from the Fall Out Boy stage that Britney’s next?!

Did you catch the one-two punch of Chris Brown and Rihanna at the VMAs? As if Rihanna’s totally hot performance of “Umbrella” (and that hot, hot, HOT outfit she was rockin’) wasn’t enough of a jaw-dropper … cutie Chris Brown did a poppin’ impersonation of Michael Jackson that blew us away. It was a real thriller … and we have it right here for you to watch. It’s a must-see!

This year’s VMAs are TERRIBLE!! Nobody onstage knows what’s going on and the performances are awful (except for Chris Brown’s bananas performance). It’s like we’re all at home watching an awesome party, but we’re not cool enough to be invited. This is awful television and a perfect example of how MTV is bottoming out

Now the Chris Brown/Rihanna performance was more up to speed for the VMAs. Too bad it’s already almost half way through the show before that happened.

{xtypo_info}This is a shot at Chris Brown, but hey it still shows that someone is paying attention to the magnificence that is Mike Jackson{/xtypo_info}

Thank you Rihanna for singing.

And Mr. Brown. I’ve seen Michael Jackson. You sir, are no Michael Jackson.

 9:44 – As much as I love to hate, I can’t say a bad thing about Chris (did he just make it rain?) Brown. The kid is on top of his game.

9:48 – And this is where Chris Brown crosses the line. Leave the Michael Jackson for the King of Pop. He has done did it now!
