[b]Earthquake Strikes Wide Area Of Southern California[/b] POSTED: 2:27 p.m. EST December 22, 2003 UPDATED: 2:55 p.m. EST December 22, 2003 An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 has been widely felt through the southern half of California today. It was centered nearly 11 miles north of Cambria, Calif., according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey. That's a coastal town about 35 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo, Calif. Cambria is about 185 miles northwest of Los Angeles -- and near the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Calif. The quake was felt as a sustained but gentle rolling motion in downtown Los Angeles. The quake is being described as very minor and there was no jolting, according to a witness San Francisco. Tad Weber, managing editor of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, about 30 miles southeast of Cambria, said he was in a meeting when "all of a sudden there was a jolting and we look up and see the building swaying. I dove under a desk to wait it out. At first we thought it was a heavy truck but it just kept going. We all called our families and they were all OK." Reports of some minor damage and some minor injuries are trickling in. A sheriff's sergeant in San Luis Obispo County said there's word of some barrels falling over at a winery, and some people being hurt there -- but that he hasn't heard "anything serious." Cambria is reportedly a very popular area with tourists.
