Comments left on various Internet message boards expressed dismay over Mario Lopez grabbing his crotch during the performance. The crotch grabbing moves were just one of several moves that Mario Lopez made mimicking Michael Jackson during the performance. Mario also did some moonwalking to kick off the performance. After the performance, judge Carrie Ann Inaba expressed her disapproval of the Michael Jackson moves. Carrie Ann Inaba said “I took a point off at the beginning because of the Michael Jackson thing. I just didn’t think it was…we’re not at the freestyle yet. But I think I gave you a point back because the hot factor on that Cha-Cha was amazing.” After his performance, Mario Lopez told host Samantha Harris backstage that, “I grew up loving Michael Jackson, I think every kid did in my generation. So you know, you’re doing “Bad,” so of course I’m going to want the opportunity to do Michael a little bit.” Despite the Michael Jackson moves, the judges awarded Mario and his partner Karina Smirnoff a near perfect score of 29 out of 30 points. Based on a recent report by the New York Times that indicated the viewers of Dancing with the Stars were overwhelmingly female and largely composed of older viewers, the controversial moves could very well have cost Mario Lopez in the viewer voting.
