MARTYN BERNARD moved a big step closer to a place in the Great Britain squad for Beijing – thanks to a bit of help from pop star Michael Jackson! The 23-year-old Liverpool-based high jumper set a new outdoor personal best as he achieved the Olympic A qualifying mark of 2.30m in a high quality meeting in Eberstadt, Germany.
Bernard finished joint first with Cuba’s Victor Moya in a competition where each jumper was able to select the music they jumped to.
“They have a number of musical meetings in Germany and it’s something I really enjoy doing,” he said.
“You need something with a good beat and I went for Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’. It was something the crowd knew and it got everyone going.
