(AP) FBI and IRS agents searched the offices of prominent personal injury lawyer and Democratic state attorney general hopeful Geoffrey Fieger on Wednesday night. Fieger became famous for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian and more recently has been known for winning multimillion-dollar awards for medical malpractice and other injury claimants. The search began about 7 p.m. and finished about four hours later as agents loaded boxes from the offices into a car and a truck, WXYZ-TV reported. An FBI spokesman would not comment on the reason for the search. “All I can tell you is I will confirm that were are executing a search warrant here, the FBI and IRS, at the law firm,” Special Agent John Gillies said as he stood outside the suburban Detroit location. Messages seeking comment were left with Fieger’s office, home and cell phone numbers Thursday shortly after midnight. According to WXYZ, the FBI said its investigation began before Republican state Attorney General Mike Cox’s investigation of whether Fieger illegally funded a $457,000 ad campaign against state Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman in last year’s election. Fieger is seeking the Democratic nomination to run against Cox in 2006. On Nov. 9, Cox called a news conference at which he admitted cheating on his wife and accused a Fieger associate of trying to expose the indiscretion unless he stopped the campaign finance investigation. Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca said Nov. 15 that he did not have sufficient evidence to prove extortion but said he would submit the matter to the state Attorney Grievance Commission. On the day he declared his candidacy in October, Fieger filed a federal court suit against Cox, Markman and Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, accusing them of conspiring to retaliate against him and deprive him of his free speech rights. He was the unsuccessful Democratic challenger to Republican Gov. John Engler in 1998. Posted by Whispernote: Fieger was a vocal talking head who was very hateful towards Jackson during the trial. He leveled personal and unprofessional insults about his looks and claimed it would get Jackson convicted.
